Ken asks…

What is the best type of guitar effects pedal?

I’ve been interested in investing in an effects pedal for my electric but i’m really not sure which type of pedal would be best. I would like one that is a good, kind of cheap price but still good quality.

Guitar Sound Effects Team answers:

Single function effect pedals come in many varieties and features and can be both simple and complex to use. You have to first figure out the application you will use such a pedal. Do you need more gain from your amp? Then go with either a distortion, overdrive, or fuzz pedal. Do you like modulated sounds? Then chorus, flanger, and phaser pedals will offer plenty of swirl and thickness for you. Do you need ambient or time-based sounds? Then either a reverb or delay pedal will suit you fine. There are plenty of other single-ended pedals that offer different shades of effect besides the more popular effects listed above (i.e. Uni-vibe, rotary speaker, octave, ring modulation, etc.,) but these are effects that are often used in moderation and probably shouldn’t be your first purchase.

Depending on what you choose, a pedal can cost you as little as $40 to as much as $400. Generally speaking, the pecking order in price for pedals begin with the distortion/overdrive pedals being the least expensive, to the modulation effects being in the middle, and the time-based effects being the most costly.

Below are four excellent pedal manufacturers for the stomp-box neophyte. All offer the type of effects listed above, are reasonably priced and should be easily accessible at your local music store:

BOSS
DigiTech
MXR
Electro-Harmonix

The most important advice we can offer, however, is to try a number of pedals out and see which one is right for you. Don’t be afraid or intimidated to ask your local music store sales person to demonstrate a few different pedals for you. Each one will have its own distinct flavor, and you’ll have to decide what is right for you.

At $129, It’s a bit more expensive than you want to pay, but I think it’s worth it. To me it’s like having a studio full of effects and amps at my fingertips.

Good luck! I hope you find the right one for you.

Steven asks…

Looking for a good multi effects pedal for a decent price for my guitar. Please help?

Preferably one that is $100 or less. Looking for sounds similar to those produced by bands such as Radiohead, Bloc Party, Muse, Arctic Monkeys, etc. (effects such as delay, echo, maybe a bit of distortion, but mostly “experimental” effects). I’m an intermediate to advanced guitar player so you can get into specifics and I’ll understand. MUST be a multi fx pedal. Just looking for recommendations. Thanks very much!

Boss me-50
it is $200 but worth it
it has 10 distortions
10 delays
and 10 modulations

What are the best pedal effects to have on Bass Guitar?

Hey i want to get some pedal effects or something like that, but im not sure which ones. Ive looked on alot of music store websites, but i have no idea which one is best for what sound i need. Any good ideas on some good effect pedals?

Guitar Sound Effects Team answers:

Personally I have a Processor the BP-80 its pretty good. Its got wah, a whammy thing… Chorus, harmony, synth, distortion, delay, reverb, and a ton of other stuff, you can even mix the effects.

Charles asks…

How can i make my amp play just the effects from the effects pedal and not my amp?

I have a digitech rp250 effects pedal and a fender G-DEC amp. The problem is I can’t figure out how to use only the effects from the pedal. There’s a bypass selection for fx select but not for amp select…I have to set it to acoustic (as opposed to metal, bluegrass, etc.) to get purely pedal effects but then it’s pretty soft. Is there anything I can do?

Guitar Sound Effects Team answers:

Try google and search for some forums related to this topic. Here it’s quite difficult since most people are teens without general knowledge.

Helen asks…

Is there an effects pedal for the bass guitar that includes a loop feature?

Im looking for a pedal that has a wah feature with a loop-er and other effects all in one so that i don’t have to buy multiple pedals and string them together.
I play a 4 string Ernie Ball Stingray jazz bass 2007 limited edition blue design.

Betty asks…

What do you call an effects pedal that gives off a bass effect, but for a 6 string guitar?

I’m trying to find a guitar effects pedal (standard 6 string electric) that creates a deep boom sound but it’s hard to type it in without having pedals come up for a bass guitar, which is not what i’m looking for.

Guitar Sound Effects Team answers:

I think you’re looking for an octave divider pedal. These effects devices will output a note an octave lower than the one you are playing.

You can mix the octave with the natural sound any way you like, or only hear the octave.

Here’s an example:

Joseph asks…

What kind of effects pedal should I get for my guitar?

I’m a beginner at guitar and I have an Epiphone SG G400. I play mostly rock, and I am looking at getting an effects pedal under $80, but I don’t know if I should get a Wah, Distortion, etc. Could someone help me out? Give me a link if you can.

Guitar Sound Effects Team answers:

Definitely distortion should be your first pedal. Stay away from the digital multi-effects units. They look like a great deal since you are getting so many different effects but they just won’t sound as good as getting individual stomp boxes. There are many options out there. I use a RAT distortion for most rock and a Boss Metal Zone for metal. I really think the RAT is a good all around distortion pedal. Check it out and read the customer reviews. If your amp doesn’t have reverb you could look at reverb or delay as your second pedal. You do not need a Wah as a beginner. You will get much more use out of distortion, reverb and delay than a Wah.
