This one was rather easy. But without the right effect it is next to impossible. The key effect I am talking about is a PHASER. Without one you wont be able to get that signature guitar intro to the song which is present through the most of the song.
The phaser I use is BOSS PH 3 pedal. It is a little different than other phaser pedals. It is probably not the best phaser pedal out there if you are after that vintage sound. It cant compare to Mutron and it is very different than MXR Phase 90 (the one I belive Gilmour used on this song) or Electro-Harmonix Small Stone. But it is very versatile and provides variety of sounds which is the reason I like it. If you like to experiment and tweak it a little to get various sounds then this is the pedal for you.
My setup is: Custom hand made Fox Stratocaster – Boss PW 10 wah – Marshall Guvnor (the old version) – Marshall Bluesbreaker (old) – Boss PH3 phaser – Boss DD6 digital delay – Marshall Valvestate 8240 Amp.
For this song I use phaser on the vintage setting (4 phase) with RATE at about 10 o clock, depth about 12 o clock and resonance at about 1 or 2 o clock. I also add a small amount of chorus (which is a stereo chorus built in the amp – one of the few features about this amp that I like). When I get to the pre chorus (…did we tell you the name of the game boy…) I turn the phaser off because it is easier to controll the playing without it (considering the faster chord changes). Starting the new verse, its on again. For the solo I use Marshall Guvnor (Gain – 10, Bass -11, Mid – 2, Trebble – 1, Level – 12 o clock). The sound comes very close althrough a good tube amp (vintage Marshall, Hiwatt …) would contribute. For the ending of the solo at the end of the song (some kind of fade out) you need to turn the volume on your guitar down a bit and turn the resonance on the phaser pedal up (somewhere around 3 or 4 o clock)
Well folks, this is my way of nailing this Pink Floyd sound. I hope this helps. Feel free to comment.
